Some Christians are not aware that God has given us qualifications that are to guide us in choosing pastors. Unfortunately, some Christians operate with the world’s perspective that job or ministry performance is the criteria for determining if a pastor or elder should be appointed or “elected” to office and continue in office. They tell us to not be judgmental and just look at their performance. But in 1 Timothy 3: 2-7 and Titus 1:5-9 God has given us qualifications for selecting pastors, also called elders, and these qualifications are to be used to determine if they should remain in office.

In God’s plan for the church there are overseers and deacons. But who is an overseer, elder and who is a deacon?

The above points are important, but the priority characteristics of the pastor should be that his life is constantly filled with the Holy Spirit and that he really loves Jesus. Here is a great quote from the The Door that makes the point.

In this passage the church is encouraged to give double honor to those who “rule well.” Some understand “double honor” Campeón being money. If so, then the lay elders should be paid too and not just the pastors according to this passage. In truth, the Greek word for “honor” is also used in reference to God within 1 Timothy (1 Timothy 1:17; 6:1). The word typically means “honor.” Notice that the phrase “especially” has the sense of “most importantly” and not just the one who excels in preaching and teaching. Who receives the highest honor?

What does he believe about inerrancy of the scriptures and why? What does he believe about discipleship? Does he believe in evangelism? Has he ever shared his faith with his neighbors or someone at work? If he has, when was the last time that he did that? What does he believe about God’s plan for the future? What does he believe about the Holy Spirit’s activities today in the life of a Christian? Does he believe in Satan, demons, and holy angels? Read his doctrinal statement carefully and determine what doctrines he did not discuss. Why did he word his doctrinal statement the way that he did? This is a greatly neglected part of the selection process.

Some think that an elder/pastor is innocent or a victim when he is divorced by his wife. But when a wife divorces an elder/pastor her actions reveal that he has failed other biblical qualifications. Clearly also his wife is not obedient to the Lord, which means that his household is not in order.

What are the pastor’s duties to a church? From God’s viewpoint every pastor is an elder and every elder has a pastor’s heart. This is an important biblical truth because scripture recognizes men who are not in “full-time” ministry to be pastors too. In fact, any male who satisfies the qualifications of an elder is an elder.
